In short: Released in 1997, Be Here Now was the most anticipated record of its era. Driven by a desire to sound colossal, the band layered dozens of guitar tracks, resulting in a bloated, nine-minute-long sonic monolith that marked the definitive end of the Britpop movement and a descent into excess.

Following the massive success of their first two albums, Oasis entered the studio in late 1996 under intense pressure. Noel Gallagher, having suffered from writer's block, had produced demos in Mustique, but the recording process at Abbey Road and Ridge Farm Studio quickly spiraled. Producer Owen Morris later described the sessions as marred by heavy drug use, with the band's primary motivation shifting toward commercial dominance.

The album's signature sound—dense, loud, and over-produced—was a deliberate choice. Noel Gallagher aimed for a "colossal" effect, layering up to ten identical guitar parts on single tracks, with some songs featuring as many as thirty guitar overdubs. This sonic density, combined with extended runtimes, resulted in tracks like the nine-minute "All Around the World." While initially met with unanimous praise and record-breaking sales, the album's legacy shifted as retrospective critics labeled it bloated and emblematic of the band's internal collapse.

The marketing campaign, managed by Ignition, became as infamous as the music. Fearful of overexposure, management enforced strict gag orders on journalists and limited radio access, creating a "fascist state" atmosphere that alienated the press. Despite selling 424,000 units on its first day and becoming the fastest-selling album in British history, the hype eventually tapered off. By 1999, it was reportedly the most common album found in second-hand record stores, signaling the end of an era for the band.
