In short: In 1989, Hirohiko Araki introduced a concept that would change manga forever: Stands. This third story arc follows Jotaro Kujo on a high-stakes trek to Egypt to defeat the vampire Dio, shifting the series from its predecessors into a world of supernatural guardian spirits.

Running in Weekly Shōnen Jump between April 3, 1989, and April 27, 1992, the 'Stardust Crusaders' arc marks a crucial turning point for the series. It introduced 'Stands'—manifestations of a user's fighting spirit—which distinguished the series from previous installments like Battle Tendency. The narrative follows Jotaro Kujo, a Japanese high school delinquent, as he discovers his own Stand, Star Platinum, after being accused of being possessed by an evil spirit. Originally titled 'Jotaro Kujo: Heritage for the Future', this instalment was later re-released as the JoJonium collection. It has since gained massive international popularity through various video games and an anime adaptation.

The stakes are deeply personal: Jotaro's mother, Holly, has fallen gravely ill due to a Stand manifesting within her. In an effort to rescue her, Jotaro teams up with Joseph Joestar, his grandfather, alongside allies such as Noriaki Kakyoin, Mohammed Avdol, Jean Pierre Polnareff, and Iggy, a Boston Terrier possessing a Stand. Their destination is Cairo, Egypt, to confront the antagonist Dio, a vampire who survived his original defeat by attaching his head to the corpse of Jonathan Joestar. The group travels across various locations, including Calcutta and Pakistan, after being forced to travel on foot. This journey is complicated by assassins sent by Dio to intercept their progress.

The arc is noted for its unique thematic shifts. While earlier parts utilized tarot themes, this arc features nine Stands named after Egyptian deities. The conflict culminates in a brutal confrontation at Dio's mansion and a final chase through Cairo. The battle reveals the terrifying power of Dio's Stand, The World, which can stop time—a capability Jotaro eventually masters through his own Stand to finally defeat the vampire and restore Joseph's life. During the final struggle, Jotaro manages to use his ability to stop time to strike back against Dio. This victory ultimately allows him to revive Joseph and ensure the vampire is destroyed by sunlight.
