A fifty-day race against time to defeat an immortal vampire across the globe
In short: In the third arc of the JoJo saga, a group of heroes embarks on a perilous journey from Japan to Egypt. Their mission is to eliminate a resurrected, vampiric antagonist whose awakening has cursed a family with a life-threatening illness. The clock is ticking, and failure means certain death.
The narrative centers on the return of Dio, the ancient nemesis of the Joestar lineage. After stealing the body of Jonathan Joestar, Dio emerges from the Atlantic Ocean in 1983. This event triggers the manifestation of Stands—physical projections of life energy—within Jonathan’s descendants, including Joseph Joestar and his grandson, Jotaro Kujo. When Holly Kujo, Jotaro’s mother, falls victim to a Stand-induced sickness, she is given a grim prognosis: she has only fifty days to live unless the source of the curse is destroyed.
To save Holly, Jotaro and Joseph assemble a team of allies, including Muhammad Avdol, Noriyaki Kakyoin, Jean Pierre Polnareff, and a dog named Iggy. Their trek across the globe culminates in Egypt, where they confront Dio. The conflict is defined by the terrifying power of Dio’s Stand, The World, which possesses the ability to stop time. It is only through the sacrifice and insight of Kakyoin, who deciphers this ability in his final moments, that Jotaro is able to defeat the vampire and secure Holly’s recovery.
Produced by David Production, the anime adaptation of this arc aired in two distinct parts between 2014 and 2015. The production team opted for a fresh visual aesthetic, departing from the styles used in previous seasons. The series is notable for its eclectic soundtrack, which incorporates iconic Western tracks like The Bangles' 1986 hit 'Walk Like an Egyptian' and the Pat Metheny Group's 'Last Train Home'. This adaptation followed earlier attempts to bring the story to the screen, including an original video project by Studio A.P.P.P. that began in 1993.
