In short: In 2005, a single, grueling fight between Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin changed the UFC forever. While Bonnar walked away with a loss, his performance helped launch the modern era of mixed martial arts, proving that the sport possessed a captivating, high-stakes drama.

Stephan Bonnar’s career was defined by high-intensity combat and significant milestones within the UFC. A standout on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter, Bonnar faced Forrest Griffin in a bout widely regarded as one of the most pivotal fights in the promotion's history. Although Bonnar lost via unanimous decision, the fight's impact was so profound that it earned him a six-figure contract and eventually led to both men being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in July 2013.

Bonnar’s technical foundation was remarkably diverse. Raised in Indiana, he began wrestling at age 10, later earning a black belt in Taekwondo by 16. His training expanded to include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Carlson Gracie in 1999, and Muay Thai in both Thailand and Las Vegas. This multidisciplinary background allowed him to compete effectively in the Light Heavyweight division, though his career was often marked by physical volatility, including knee injuries and two separate instances of testing positive for anabolic steroids—Boldenone in 2006 and Drostanolone following a 2012 bout against Anderson Silva.

Beyond the octagon, Bonnar’s life was a mixture of professional versatility and public struggle. He transitioned into professional wrestling with companies like Impact Wrestling and served as a commentator for the WEC. However, his later years were shadowed by legal issues, including a 2018 DUI arrest in Nevada that became a viral moment due to the unusual circumstances of his apprehension. He passed away in Las Vegas on December 22, 2022, at age 45; while initial reports suggested a heart complication, the coroner later identified an accidental fentanyl overdose as the cause.
