From White House technology advisor to Virginia's representative in the United States Congress
In short: Suhas Subramanyam has navigated a rapid ascent through Virginia politics, becoming the first South Asian American elected to the state's General Assembly. Now serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, his career blends a background in technology policy with a commitment to legislative reform in Northern Virginia's growing exurbs.
Born in Houston in 1986 to parents who emigrated from India, Suhas Subramanyam built a career rooted in both law and technology. After graduating from Tulane University and earning a law degree from Northwestern University, he gained early experience as a legislative aide and a clerk for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. His work in the Obama administration as a technology policy advisor involved leading a task force focused on IT modernization and the regulation of emerging technologies, a precursor to his later legislative focus.
Subramanyam entered elected office in 2019, winning a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. His tenure in state government was marked by his efforts to increase bipartisanship, including co-founding a caucus dedicated to that goal, and his role in establishing a legislative group for Asian American and Pacific Islander lawmakers. Beyond his political work, he has maintained a connection to his community through service as a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Loudoun County, where he currently resides with his family.
In 2024, Subramanyam was elected to represent Virginia's 10th congressional district, succeeding Jennifer Wexton. His district encompasses a diverse range of Northern Virginia areas, including Loudoun, Fauquier, and Rappahannock counties. Since taking office in January 2025, he has focused on government oversight, including introducing legislation aimed at increasing transparency for the Department of Government Efficiency. His committee assignments reflect his background, spanning science, technology, and government reform, where he serves as a ranking member on the subcommittee for military and foreign affairs.
