In short: Don Beyer has spent decades in the halls of power, from serving as Virginia's lieutenant governor to representing the state in Congress. Yet, at an age when many might retire, he returned to the classroom to earn a master's degree in computer science, focusing specifically on the complexities of machine learning.

Born in 1950 in the Free Territory of Trieste, Don Beyer’s path to Washington was paved by a family legacy of public service. His grandmother, Clara Mortenson Beyer, was a labor economics pioneer during the New Deal, while his grandfather, Otto S. Beyer Jr., chaired the National Mediation Board. After graduating from Williams College in 1972, Beyer spent years as a successful automobile dealer in Virginia before entering politics. He served two terms as lieutenant governor of Virginia starting in 1990, a period marked by his focus on high-tech industry promotion and welfare reform.

Beyer’s career shifted toward international diplomacy when he served as the U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein from 2009 to 2013 under President Barack Obama. Upon returning to domestic politics, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014 to represent Virginia's 8th district. Since then, he has established himself as a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, consistently winning reelection in a district that has historically been one of the most Democratic in the state.

His legislative agenda reflects a blend of traditional policy and modern technological concerns. He has introduced bills ranging from the Fair Representation Act, which advocates for ranked-choice voting, to the Cost of Police Misconduct Act. More recently, he has turned his attention to the intersection of technology and ethics. In 2022, he enrolled at George Mason University to pursue a master's degree in computer science. This academic pursuit informs his legislative work, such as the Artificial Intelligence Environmental Impacts Act, which seeks to measure the energy consumption and environmental footprint of AI development.

Beyond his legislative work, Beyer maintains a wide range of interests, from animal welfare—evidenced by his efforts to ban the trade of donkey-hide gelatin and animal-tested cosmetics—to fiscal policy. His career demonstrates a rare commitment to bridging the gap between established political experience and the rapidly evolving technical challenges of the 21st century.
