The killer clown whose head burns with a permanent, cursed flame
In short: In the Twisted Metal series, the mascot Sweet Tooth is more than just a menacing clown in a combat ice cream truck. Behind the mask lies Marcus Kane, a man whose descent into madness and split personality created one of gaming's most iconic, and terrifying, villains.
Sweet Tooth, the pseudonym for Marcus Kane, serves as the mascot for the Twisted Metal video game series. While his appearance has evolved—from a slim, green-haired circus clown in the original game to a bulkier, bare-chested figure in the Black reboot—certain traits remain constant. Most notable is the perpetual flame on his head, a feature introduced in the second game. In the Twisted Metal: Black storyline, this fire is revealed to be a curse imposed by the character Preacher, causing Kane endless pain. His vehicle is a modified ice cream truck designed for combat. In later games, he even serves as the tournament's master.
The character's origins are rooted in a psychological fracture. Originally a middle-aged ice cream salesman and father of four, Marcus Kane developed a dark, sadistic split personality known as 'Needles.' This persona eventually subdued his original identity, leading him to murder his family. During the struggle, his daughter Sophie managed to strike him with scissors, becoming the only person to ever survive his murderous urges. This violent transformation occurred after he finally succumbed to his dark impulses. His descent into madness was marked by the creation of a macabre clown mask.
This event defined his motivation for entering the Twisted Metal tournaments: a relentless hunt for Sophie. In one dark narrative arc, Kane's obsession leads him to a cruel trick by the tournament host, Calypso, who reveals that Sophie had committed suicide years earlier. The character's legacy is one of generational trauma, with his son Charlie eventually donning the mask and setting his own head ablaze to continue the cycle of violence. This cycle of brutality is a central theme in the series' lore. Even his vehicles have undergone various redesigns over the years.
