In short: In the 2012 vehicular combat game Twisted Metal, winning the tournament doesn't guarantee happiness. Instead, players face the enigmatic Calypso, whose literal interpretations of wishes often result in horrific fates, turning even the most desperate quests for redemption into inescapable, dark tragedies.

Developed by Eat Sleep Play and published by Sony for the PlayStation 3, the game serves as the second reboot of the series. While originally intended as a multiplayer-only title, Sony requested the addition of a single-player story mode to satisfy fans of the franchise's lore. This led to a narrative defined by dark, ironic outcomes for its combatants. The project was initially titled Twisted Metal: Apocalypse before the directors opted for a different direction. It was originally scheduled for an October 2011 launch but suffered delays until early 2012.

The story follows several characters through a tournament hosted by Calypso. Sweet Tooth, a serial killer seeking his daughter Sophie, discovers she died by suicide ten years prior. Daniel Grimm, a biker attempting to prevent his father's death, inadvertently causes the very accident he sought to avert. Krista Sparks, known as Dollface, wishes to be on the world's biggest runway, only to be crushed by a landing airplane on an actual airport runway. The protagonist Sweet Tooth is also known as Needles Kane. His rival, the Brothers Grimm, operate using massive monster trucks.

The game's lore suggests a deeper, more sinister reality. The character The Preacher claims Calypso is a demonic entity, a notion supported by the host's office briefly flashing into a demonic form. The game's conclusion implies Calypso traps the souls of his victims and protesters within a demonic structure, effectively turning his tournament into a soul-collecting enterprise. A mysterious figure called The Preacher attempts to defeat the host. This character is first introduced through a radio broadcast.
