The Kurdish-led coalition that became an Arab majority
In short: Founded in 2015 to build a secular, federal Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was initially seen as a Kurdish militia. Yet, through years of conflict, the group’s demographic core shifted, eventually transforming into a multi-ethnic alliance dominated by Arab fighters.
The SDF emerged on 10 October 2015 as the military arm of the administration in North and East Syria, often called Rojava. While the group was led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), its stated mission was to establish a democratic, non-sectarian Syrian state. This multi-ethnic vision was reinforced by the inclusion of Arab, Assyrian, Turkmen, and even Chechen factions, such as the al-Sanadid Forces and the Army of Revolutionaries.
A significant evolution occurred in the group's composition. Although early reports described the SDF as essentially a Kurdish subsidiary, the demographic weight shifted significantly during the war against ISIL. By 201s7, the U.S. Department of Defense reported an Arab majority. A 2019 Wilson Center study of 391 fighters confirmed this trend, finding that 68.7% of respondents were Arab, while Kurds comprised only 17.2%. Some estimates even suggested that as much as 90% of the group's growth since its inception came from Arab volunteers.
The group's history is marked by both territorial triumphs and political dissolution. The SDF successfully drove ISIL from strategic hubs like Raqqa and Manbij, reaching a peak of territorial control of approximately 25% of Syria by 2022. However, following an offensive by the Syrian transitional government in January 2026, a 14-point ceasefire was negotiated via U.S. envoy Tom Barrack. This led to the handover of key oil fields and border crossings, culminating in commander Mazloum Abdi declaring the SDF's dissolution and its total integration into the Syrian Army on 25 August 2026.
