In short: In late 2024, a diverse coalition of southern Syrian rebels achieved what many thought impossible: they were the first opposition group to capture the capital. But their path to power was paved with complex alliances, former regime ties, and a delicate balancing act between local autonomy and national integration.

The Southern Operations Room (SOR) emerged as a pivotal military coalition in late 2024, primarily coordinating opposition forces from the southern provinces of Daraa, Suwayda, and Quneitra. While it publicly championed 'freedom and dignity,' its origins were deeply rooted in the complex web of the Syrian civil war. The group was preceded by the Southern Front and began organizing in 2023 under the guidance of advisers from the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led Military Operations Command. This coordination involved approximately 25 opposition factions aiming to launch a unified offensive against the Assad regime.

The SOR’s leadership is notable for its history of shifting loyalties. Key figures like Ahmad al-Awda and Nassim Abu Ara were former officers in Assad's army before joining the rebellion. Al-Awda, often dubbed 'Russia's man in Southern Syria,' even served as a commander for the Syrian Arab Armed Forces' 5th Corps branch following a 2018 reconciliation agreement with Russia. This history of collaboration with both government forces and Islamist groups like Al-Nusra Front highlights the pragmatic—and sometimes controversial—nature of the coalition’s makeup.

The group's rapid success in late 2024 saw them seize Daraa, Quneitra, and eventually Damascus, where they were recognizable by their distinctive southern headdresses. However, victory brought immediate friction. Tensions arose regarding integration into a new Ministry of Defense; while many factions agreed to merge, the SOR initially hesitated. Internal divisions also surfaced when Druze groups within the coalition broke away to form the National Guard in July 2025. By April 2025, despite these internal shifts, the Eighth Brigade—a core component of the SOR—formally dissolved following a standoff with the transitional government.

The SOR's legacy is defined by its role as a bridge between local community needs and national governance. While some members were accused of working with the government at the expense of locals, the group ultimately sought to maintain state institutions while navigating a landscape dominated by various competing interests, including HTS and the new caretaker government.
