The band that refused to let any genre define its sound
In short: Formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tally Hall initially described their eclectic musical style as "wonky rock." However, they eventually redefined their sound as "fabloo"—a term designed to prevent critics from trapping their diverse, harmony-heavy music within a single genre.
The group's origins trace back to the University of Michigan, where members Joe Hawley, Rob Cantor, and Zubin Sedghi met. Before settling on the name Tally Hall—inspired by a local mall's food court—the musicians performed under various monikers, including 540 and Gallagher and PartyBoobyTrap. The final lineup was solidified when drummer Ross Federman joined the group after being spotted practicing his skills near a dormitory. The group's initial members included guitarist Andrew Horowitz and drummer Steve Gallagher. This early iteration eventually transitioned into the permanent lineup known to fans.
Tally Hall's career was marked by a significant shift in label dynamics. They released their debut, Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum, on October 24, 2005, through the indie label Quack! Media. In March 2007, they signed with the major label Atlantic Records, which led to a re-recording of their debut in 2008. However, their relationship with Atlantic eventually fell apart, causing a two-year delay for their second album, Good & Evil, which was finally released on June 21, 2011, via Quack! Media. The band's musical output also included a web series titled Tally Hall's Internet Show. They even provided vocals for the children's television program Happy Monster Band.
Following their final performance on August 20, 2011, at Mr. Smalls Theatre, the band entered a 15-year hiatus. During this period, the members pursued diverse paths: Andrew Horowitz released solo piano compositions and worked with John Legend; Ross Federman earned a Ph.D. in immunology from Yale; and Zubin Sedghi became a family medicine doctor. After over a decade of independent endeavors, the band officially announced a reunion in 2026. Joe Hawley also explored musical projects under the name Miracle Musical. Additionally, Rob Cantor has composed music for various Disney Junior productions.
