From Tehran to Broadway: The journey of a pioneer named Tala Ashe
In short: Born in Tehran and raised in Ohio, Tala Ashe has transformed from a young immigrant into a Tony-nominated powerhouse. Her career spans superhero television, gritty dramas, and the prestigious stages of Broadway, driven by a name that literally means 'pioneer'.
Tala Ashe, born Talayeh Ashrafi, carries a name rooted in the Persian epic, the Shahnameh, which translates to 'pioneer'. Her journey from Tehran to the United States began in infancy, when she immigrated at just nine months old. Growing up in Powell, Ohio, her passion for the stage took root in high school theatre, where she worked as both a director and an actress.
Her professional training is as diverse as her roles. Following her BFA at Boston University's School of Theatre, she polished her skills at both the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. This rigorous preparation paved the way for a career that bridges television and stage. On screen, she is widely recognized for her roles in series such as Smash, American Odyssey, and her regular part as Zary Tomaz on The CW's Legends of Tomorrow.
Ashe's theatrical achievements reached a pinnacle with her performance in the play English. The play premiered at the Linda Gross Theatre during 2022 before transferring to the Todd Haimes Theatre at the Roundabout Theatre Company on Broadway in January 2025. For her portrayal of Elham, she earned a Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance alongside a 2024 Tony Award nod for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
Beyond her individual accolades, Ashe is a founding member of Shethority, a project dedicated to the inspiration and upliftment of women. An Iranian-American holding dual citizenship, she remains fluent in Persian, bridging her cultural heritage with her prominent place in American performing arts.
