In short: In the mid-1980s, Tesla emerged from the California rock scene, offering a bluesy alternative to the era's dominant glam metal sound. While many contemporaries focused on artifice, this group drew inspiration from the legacy of Nikola Tesla and 1970s rock legends to create something distinct.

Formed in late 1981 by bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon, the band originally operated under the name City Kidd. They adopted the Tesla moniker just before their 1986 debut, Mechanical Resonance, after being advised that their original name was already in use by another group. This shift signaled a thematic direction, as the band began deriving song titles and content from the life of inventor Nikola Tesla.

During the 1980s hair metal boom, Tesla achieved significant commercial success. Their 1989 album, The Great Radio Controversy, reached number 18 on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit 'Love Song'. In 1990, they released the live acoustic album Five Man Acoustical Jam, which peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200 and included their top-charting single 'Signs', a cover of a 1971 track by the Five Man Electrical Band.

The band's musical identity has often been a point of contention. While they were frequently categorized as glam metal during early tours with artists like Poison and Def Leppard, the members themselves initially resented the label. Critics eventually noted that their heavy blues and 1970s hard rock influences—reminiscent of bands like Led Zeppelin and Queen—set them apart from their peers, leading some to describe them as a 'thinking man's hair metal band.'

Despite a hiatus between 1996 and 2000, the band has maintained a steady presence in rock music. They have achieved significant commercial reach, with sales in the United States estimated at over 14 million albums. Their enduring lineup has seen various iterations, including the departure of guitarist Tommy Skeoch in 2006, who was replaced by Dave Rude.
