How a celebrity game show became the most watched television event of 2025
In short: The Celebrity Traitors series 1 captivated the UK, becoming the most watched television broadcast of 2025. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman and filmed at Ardross Castle, the high-stakes competition saw nineteen celebrities compete for charity. The finale, featuring a surprise victory, cemented its status as a defining cultural moment of the year.
Commissioned in August 2024, The Celebrity Traitors was designed to elevate the existing franchise to a new level. Filming commenced on 22 April 2025, spanning nine episodes that aired on BBC One between 8 October and 6 November 2025. The production process was not without technical hurdles; a miscommunication between All3Media International and its partners in Canada and New Zealand led to the final episode being accidentally released online 24 hours before its scheduled UK broadcast.
The cast, revealed on 13 May 2025, was lauded by critics for featuring genuinely recognizable figures. Alan Carr, who ultimately emerged as the sole remaining Traitor, was a particular standout. His victory, which secured £87,500 for his chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK, was widely celebrated. The i Paper described his win as the television moment of the year, while others hailed the series as one of the most unifying cultural events of the century in the UK.
Beyond its popularity, the series earned significant industry recognition, including two British Academy Television Awards and two British Academy Television Craft Awards. Alan Carr’s performance also contributed to his National Television Award for Special Recognition in 2026. The show’s success was further solidified by its commercial reach, with a three-disc DVD box set released in region two on 4 May 2026. The series remains a benchmark for reality television, praised for its casting and its ability to capture the national imagination.
