In this 2007 shooter, you wield an ancient demonic force to dismantle a mob
In short: Jackie Estacado is a mob enforcer whose 21st birthday turns into a nightmare when an ancient, bloodline-bound demonic force known as the Darkness manifests within him. As he navigates a violent path of vengeance through New York City, he discovers that his new powers thrive only in the shadows.
Released in 2007 by 2K and developed by Starbreeze Studios, The Darkness is a first-person shooter based on the Top Cow Productions comic book series. The narrative follows Jackie Estacado, who is targeted for assassination by his uncle, Don Paulie Franchetti. After the Darkness violently massacres his pursuers, Jackie begins dismantling Paulie's criminal operations. The conflict escalates when Paulie bombs an orphanage and murders Jackie's girlfriend, Jenny Romano, leading a grief-stricken Jackie to commit suicide and enter the Otherworld.
The Otherworld is a hellish landscape resembling World War I trenches, inhabited by undead soldiers and representations of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Here, Jackie meets his ancestor, Anthony Estacado, who reveals he brought the curse into their family. Jackie eventually returns to the real world, where he must balance his conventional weaponry with the Darkness's supernatural abilities. These powers, which include summoning imp-like Darklings and creating black holes, are restricted by light, forcing players to strategically shoot out lights to expand their reach.
The game is noted for its dense, often extravagant detail, including the ability to watch full films like To Kill a Mockingbird or The Man with the Golden Arm within the game world. Despite some criticism regarding its physics engine and AI, the title received favorable reviews and was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Story Development at the 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. It has sold over a million units worldwide, though its depiction of violence and language led to a ban in Singapore.
Ultimately, the game explores the cost of power. As the Darkness warns Jackie, each life he takes further consumes his humanity. Even after achieving his revenge against Paulie, Jackie finds himself fully enveloped by the entity, leaving him trapped in a bittersweet, dreamlike epilogue. The game remains accessible today through Xbox backwards compatibility, allowing modern players to experience this genre-bending narrative.
