The Thanksgiving myth was engineered to mask a history of state-sponsored removal
In short: We are taught that Thanksgiving began with a harmonious feast between settlers and Indigenous people. In reality, this narrative serves as a convenient veil over a systematic campaign of land seizure, legal betrayal, and ecological warfare designed to dismantle sovereign nations.
The traditional story of the 'Pilgrims'—a term not actually used by the settlers until the 1880s—often paints them as seekers of religious freedom. However, historical records suggest they were separatists motivated by land ownership and the establishment of a religious theocracy. They arrived in Massachusetts Bay in late 1621 to find land that appeared 'unoccupied' primarily because Indigenous populations had been decimated by disease. The transition from initial contact to systemic displacement was marked by significant legal and political maneuvers. While the Supreme Court initially ruled in favor of the Cherokee Nation in Worcester v. Georgia, President Andrew Jackson ultimately betrayed this ruling. This defiance facilitated the Indian Removal Act of 1830, leading to the forced relocation known as the Trail of Tears.
These actions were part of a broader state-engineered system that utilized legal paperwork and court betrayals rather than just battlefield conquest to clear the frontier. Beyond legal warfare, the United States employed ecological destruction as a military strategy. The deliberate extermination of approximately 60 million American bison was used to induce starvation among Indigenous groups, forcing them into reservation confinement. This era of expansion continued through policies like the Dawes Act of 1887, culminating in tragic events such as the Ghost Dance movement and the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890.
The narrative of a peaceful 'first harvest' ignores that the Wampanoag had experienced over a century of contact with English settlers prior to the Mayflower's arrival. These interactions were often tense and complex, far removed from the simplified version taught in schools. By framing the history as one of Indigenous generosity toward colonizers, the state effectively obscured a bloody history of manifest destiny and forced removal.
