How a cult classic hockey film evolved into a short-lived streaming series
In short: The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers revived a beloved sports franchise for a new generation, shifting the focus from an elite powerhouse to a ragtag group of underdogs. Despite critical acclaim and a nostalgic return of original cast members, the series faced a sudden cancellation and eventual removal from Disney+.
Developed by Steve Brill, Josh Goldsmith, and Cathy Yuspa, the series served as a direct follow-up to the 1992 film. The narrative centers on 12-year-old Evan Morrow, who, after being cut from the now-elite Mighty Ducks junior team, forms a new squad called the Don't Bothers. With the reluctant guidance of original coach Gordon Bombay—now a despondent rink owner—the team learns to prioritize fun over the cutthroat culture of youth sports.
The production journey was marked by significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed filming in Vancouver until late 2020. The series premiered on Disney+ in March 2021 to generally favorable reviews, holding an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It even bridged the gap between eras by featuring cameos from original film stars like Elden Henson and Marguerite Moreau in its sixth episode, alongside promotional collaborations with the NHL.
Despite its heart and humor, the show's tenure was brief. Following a second season that introduced Josh Duhamel as a new coach, Disney cancelled the series in February 2023. By May 2023, the show was purged from the Disney+ library entirely as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative led by CEO Bob Iger. This rapid disappearance highlights the volatile nature of streaming content, where even well-received projects can be erased to balance corporate ledgers.
The series remains a notable example of how legacy intellectual property is leveraged in the streaming era. While it successfully captured the spirit of the original films, the combination of contract disputes—such as the departure of Emilio Estevez—and shifting corporate priorities ultimately cut the Don't Bothers' story short after just two seasons.
