A secret society where magic meets a brutal underground war
In short: Beneath the surface of Belgrave University lies a clandestine world governed by the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose. Here, students don't just study history; they practice magic and navigate a violent conflict between werewolves and dark arts, all while uncovering buried family secrets.
This secret society is defined by its internal structure, featuring roles such as Neophytes, Acolytes, and Magistratus. The narrative explores the tension between different magical factions, specifically an underground battle involving werewolves and various dark arts. The organization includes a Gnostic Council and various high-ranking members like temple magi. Jack also becomes affiliated with the Knights of Saint Christopher. This group features its own resident advisors and students who oppose or interact with the Order's magic.
The production utilized a mix of real-world locations to build this fictional universe. While Belgrave University was primarily portrayed by buildings at the University of British Columbia Vancouver Campus, aerial shots featured Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The Order's headquarters were staged in the Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, while the Blade and Chalice bar occupied the UBC Old Auditorium building.
Created by Dennis Heaton, the show premiered on Netflix on March 7, 2019. Despite a successful debut—earning a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season—the series was canceled in November 2020 after two seasons. The story centers on Jack's personal journey as he confronts his estranged father, Edward Coventry, who serves as the grand magus of the Order. Production for the first season took place in Vancouver between April and July of 2018. The second season filmed throughout late 2019. While it received high critical scores, Netflix officially ended the show after its ten-episode sophomore run.
