What happens when you treat the bizarre medical ailments of science fiction characters?
In short: In the Ergulon Galaxy, two alien surgeons tackle the universe's strangest diseases, from time-loop traps to parasites feeding on cortisol. Created by Cirocco Dunlap, this animated series blends high-concept sci-fi with grounded emotional honesty, exploring anxiety and professional life through the lens of a chaotic, living deep space clinic.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, which premiered its second season on May 27, 2025, originated from a simple question: who treats the characters in science fiction movies? Creator Cirocco Dunlap, known for her work on Russian Doll, envisioned a medical facility capable of handling the aftermath of cinematic tropes, such as the entities found in John Carpenter's 1982 film, The Thing. Executive produced by Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne, the show balances its wacky, extraterrestrial premise with a sincere focus on emotional health.
At the heart of the series are Drs. Sleech and Klak, two female alien surgeons navigating the pressures of their profession. While the show features green goo, hybrid creatures, and mind control therapies, its thematic core is deeply personal. Dunlap drew heavily from her own experiences with anxiety to shape the narrative, shifting the focus from episodic time-travel plots to a sustained exploration of mental health. The writers' room, composed entirely of female and LGBTQ+ writers, aimed to create inclusive representation that feels natural, mirroring the subtle inclusivity Dunlap admired in Star Trek.
The production team sought to ground the show's absurdity by consulting real-life scientists and doctors, ensuring the medical logic held a sense of internal consistency. This commitment to emotional honesty means that even the most bizarre alien illnesses are designed to resonate with human experiences. As the series progresses, the narrative shifts its focus between the two leads; while the first season centered on Klak's journey, the second season delves into the controversial past of Dr. Sleech, as a persistent cyborg journalist begins to uncover long-buried incidents within the hospital's history.
