In short: When a Möbius strip-shaped UFO descends on Earth and sprouts a crystalline tower, humanity scrambles to respond. Captain Niko Breckinridge leads the crew of the Salvare on a high-stakes mission to uncover the artifact's origins, navigating faster-than-light travel and a sentient AI while facing existential threats from beyond.

Created by Aaron Martin, the science fiction drama Another Life premiered on Netflix in July 2019. The narrative splits between two fronts: Erik Wallace, a scientist with the United States Interstellar Command, investigates the alien structure on Earth, while his wife, Captain Niko Breckinridge, commands the spaceship Salvare to track the source of the extraterrestrial visitors. The series explores themes of contact and survival, featuring a crew that relies on hibernation pods to endure long-distance space travel.

The Salvare is managed by William, a holographic artificial intelligence that serves as a confidant to Niko. Throughout the series, the crew faces internal and external dangers, including the influence of the Achaia, an alien force that infects humans with implants. The show's two-season run, which concluded in 2021, tracks the evolution of the crew as they grapple with the loss of members like Ian Yerxa and August Catawnee, and the complex nature of their AI companions, including the original AI Gabriel and the later-created Yara.

Despite its ambitious premise, the series faced significant critical headwinds. Rotten Tomatoes reported that only 6% of critic ratings were positive for the first season, with reviewers describing it as a collection of science fiction homages lacking a unique identity. Metacritic similarly recorded an average score of 33 out of 100, indicating generally unfavorable reception. Following the release of the second season in October 2021, Netflix announced the cancellation of the series in February 2022.

Production of the show was marked by logistical challenges, particularly during the second season. Filming, which primarily took place in Vancouver, was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, causing delays that pushed the conclusion of production into December 2020. Despite these hurdles, the series remains a notable example of a high-concept streaming production that attempted to blend character-driven drama with large-scale science fiction mystery.
