In short: Formed in London in 1976, The Slits began as a raucous, drum-heavy punk outfit. By their 1979 debut, they had transformed into an avant-garde force, blending reggae and dub into a polished, experimental sound that remains a defining pillar of the post-punk era. Their journey was as unconventional as their music.

The Slits emerged in October 1976 after Ari Up, inspired by a Patti Smith performance, connected with Palmolive and Kate Korus. Their early sound, documented in 1977 and 1978 Peel Sessions, was defined by raw energy. However, the band underwent a significant stylistic shift following the departure of drummer Palmolive in 1978. Her replacement, Budgie, helped pivot the group toward a bass-oriented aesthetic heavily influenced by reggae, dub, and world music.

This new direction culminated in the 1979 release of their debut album, Cut, produced by Dennis Bovell. The record became famous for its provocative cover art featuring the band members covered in mud and loincloths. While rumors persisted that Palmolive left due to this imagery, guitarist Viv Albertine maintained that Palmolive had been asked to leave the group months before the album was recorded. The band continued to push boundaries in the early 1980s, forming an alliance with the Bristol-based Pop Group and embracing increasingly experimental, avant-garde compositions.

The group disbanded in early 1982 after releasing their second studio album, Return of the Giant Slits. Decades later, in 2005, Ari Up and Tessa Pollitt reformed the band, eventually releasing the album Trapped Animal in 2009. Ari Up passed away in 2010 at age 48, but the band’s legacy endured through documentaries and archival releases, cementing their status as influential figures who refused to be confined by the conventions of the punk movement.
