In short: James Lee Williams, known as The Vivienne, redefined British drag by winning the inaugural RuPaul's Drag Race UK. Beyond the crown, they broke barriers in mainstream television, from ice skating to musical theatre, while using their platform to advocate for LGBTQ visibility and candidly address the struggles of addiction.

Born in 1992, James Lee Williams grew up in North Wales before moving to Liverpool at 16 to pursue a career as a make-up artist. Inspired by the performance art of Chad Michaels and Derrick Barry, Williams adopted the name The Vivienne—a nod to their signature Vivienne Westwood attire—and quickly established a presence in the local drag scene. Their career trajectory shifted dramatically in 2015 when they were crowned the UK Drag Ambassador for RuPaul's Drag Race, a title that paved the way for their eventual victory in the first series of the UK franchise in 2019.

The Vivienne’s influence extended far beyond the runway. They became a versatile entertainer, releasing dance-pop music, presenting web series, and making history as the first drag performer to compete on the ITV show Dancing on Ice, where they placed third in 2023. Their work often blended humor with social commentary, such as their viral impersonation of Donald Trump and their advocacy for HIV awareness through charity collaborations. However, their public life was also marked by challenges, including a 2023 homophobic assault in Liverpool that prompted them to speak out against ongoing prejudice.

Tragically, Williams passed away on 3 January 2025 at the age of 32. A coroner’s inquest later recorded a verdict of death by misadventure, citing cardiac arrest linked to a ketamine overdose. In the wake of their death, the drag community and global fans mourned a performer described by RuPaul as a beacon of creativity. Their family has since partnered with the charity Adferiad to promote open dialogue regarding substance abuse, ensuring that Williams' legacy continues to support those facing similar struggles.
