The making of a president began with a year repeated in school
In short: Before he was a world leader, George H.W. Bush was a student who had to start over. A serious infection forced him to repeat a year at an elite boarding school—a moment his siblings later called the defining turning point that shaped his character and leadership.
George Herbert Walker Bush entered the world in 1924 amidst great wealth and status; his guardians lived by the principle that individuals possessing abundance owe a greater responsibility to society. His parent, Prescott Bush, worked as an American investment banker on Wall Street. Senator, while his mother, Dorothy Bush, emphasized humility over bragging. This dual upbringing of duty and modesty set the stage for his public life, though his membership in the Yale secret society Skull and Bones later became a point of contention for critics regarding his elitism.
A pivotal moment occurred during his time at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. After contracting a severe staph infection that hospitalized him for six weeks, Bush chose to repeat his junior year rather than move on. This decision allowed him to enter school with peers his own age, where he flourished as senior class president and captain of both the baseball and soccer teams. His siblings viewed this period of social recalibration as "the making of George Bush."
His sense of duty was further tested in 1941 when the bombing of Pearl Harbor prompted him to defer his Yale acceptance at age 18 to join the Navy. He became the youngest pilot in the U.S. Navy, flying 58 combat missions as a torpedo bomber pilot in the Pacific during World War II. After being shot down by the Japanese in 1944 and winning the Distinguished Flying Cross, he eventually transitioned into business and politics, cofounding several oil companies before serving as Vice President (1981–89) and the 41st President (1989–93).
The George Bush Library and Museum, situated in College Station, Texas, maintains his history via learning materials designed for every age group.
