In short: Long before he became the 41st president, George H.W. Bush was a teenage pilot flying dangerous combat missions in World War II. His survival after being shot down at sea became a defining moment of his life, shaping his perspective on duty, service, and the unexpected path of his future career.

Born in 1924, George H.W. Bush grew up in a wealthy family in Connecticut. On his 18th birthday in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. By 1944, he was flying a torpedo bomber in the Pacific theater. During a mission over Chichijima, his plane was hit by enemy fire. While his crew members perished, Bush managed to parachute out and was eventually rescued by the USS Finback. This harrowing experience earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and left him questioning why he had been spared.

After the war, Bush graduated from Yale in 1948 and moved to Texas to pursue a career in the oil industry. He co-founded several companies, including the Zapata Petroleum Corporation, before turning his attention to politics. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives starting in 1966 and later held a series of high-level appointments, including U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, head of the U.S. Liaison Office in China, and Director of Central Intelligence.

Bush’s path to the presidency was marked by both success and significant setbacks. After losing the 1980 Republican primary to Ronald Reagan, he served as vice president for eight years. He finally won the presidency in 1988, though his term was defined by the end of the Cold War, the Gulf War, and a controversial decision to raise taxes despite his campaign promise. He left office in 1993 after losing to Bill Clinton, later seeing his son, George W. Bush, follow in his footsteps to the presidency in 2000.

Beyond his political legacy, Bush was known for his long marriage to Barbara Bush and his commitment to public service. He passed away in 2018 in Houston. Historians often view his presidency as above average, noting his role in navigating complex international shifts, such as the reunification of Germany and the creation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
