How to film the Holocaust without ever showing a single atrocity
In short: Director Jonathan Glazer’s 2023 film, The Zone of Interest, avoids the visual spectacle of horror. Instead, it uses a 'Big Brother' camera technique and a massive, meticulously researched sound library to force audiences to hear the unimaginable through the mundane lives of perpetrators.
Rather than relying on traditional cinematic drama, Glazer employed a 'forensic' and 'unsentimental' approach to demystify the perpetrators of the Holocaust. He sought to avoid portraying them as 'mythologically evil,' instead focusing on the domestic mundanity of Rudolf and Hedwig Höss. To achieve this, Glazer and cinematographer Łukasz Żal hid up to 10 cameras around a replica of the Höss residence, running them simultaneously with no crew on set. This allowed the actors, Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, to improvise within a live, continuous environment.
The film's true horror resides in its auditory landscape. Sound designer Johnnie Burn spent a year constructing a 600-page document of historical testimonies and maps to ensure the distance and echoes of sounds—such as gunshots, screams, and the hum of furnaces—were period-accurate. He even sourced the voices of French prisoners from 2022 Paris riots to recreate the atmosphere of new arrivals at Auschwitz. This 'other film' of sound is paired with a score by Mica Levi that uses a combination of primordial human voices and modern synthesizers.
The production was a feat of historical reconstruction. Because the original Höss house had become too weathered for film, production designer Chris Oddy built a replica using a nearby derelict building and began planting a garden in April 2021 to ensure it was in bloom for the summer shoot. While the domestic life of the Höss family is shown in natural light, the nighttime sequences featuring a Polish girl were captured using thermal imaging cameras from the Polish military, later upscaled with AI to maintain a modern, non-aestheticized look.
