In short: A hand gesture from Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games has transcended the screen to become a potent tool for real-world political resistance. Once a cinematic symbol of rebellion, it is now used by protesters across Southeast Asia to demand democracy and challenge authoritarian regimes.

Popularised during the 2010s via The Hunger Games series, this three-finger salute involves extending the middle, ring, and index fingers while keeping the pinky and thumb tucked. Within the cinematic and literary works, characters execute this sign by touching the left hand's three central fingers to their lips before lifting them upwards. While it bears resemblance to the Scout sign used since 1908 or the Ukrainian salute mimicking the Tryzub, it is unclear if these inspired Suzanne Collins. In the original series, the gesture is performed by District 12 citizens to honour Katniss Everdeen. This specific action occurs after she volunteers for the games to save her sister.

In the real world, the gesture transitioned from fiction to political activism following the 2014 Thai coup d'état. Protesters in Thailand adopted the salute to represent the French Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. The gesture has since been used in various movements, including the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests and the 2021 Myanmar protests following its country's coup d'état.

The symbol's reach extends to Indonesia, where the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) adopted it as a campaign motif for candidate Ganjar Pranowo in 2023. This move was seen as resistance against perceived unfair democratic processes. In response, a 'Four-finger salute' emerged, fusing Ganjar's symbol with the index finger symbol of candidate Anies Baswedan to represent a united opposition against Prabowo Subianto's candidacy. This political adoption led to a crackdown by the Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs. Officials warned civil servants that using such political hand signs could result in immediate dismissal.
