The forgotten hero of the 1925 Serum Run was not Balto
In short: History remembers Balto, the dog honored with a statue in Central Park, for saving Nome from a diphtheria outbreak. But the true driving force of the legendary 1925 Serum Run was a small, mischievous Siberian husky named Togo, who navigated much more dangerous territory.
In January 1925, a diphtheria outbreak threatened the 1,400 residents of Nome, Alaska. The disease, which causes respiratory infections and can lead to suffocation, required an urgent shipment of antitoxin serum. Because the extreme Arctic winter made flying too dangerous, officials organized a relay of dog-sled teams to transport the medicine from Nenana to Nome.
While the dog Balto received global media acclaim for the final leg of the relay, his owner, Leonhard Seppala, argued that Togo deserved the true credit. Togo, a Siberian husky weighing less than 50 pounds, led a pack of 19 dogs through the most treacherous 630-mile stretch of the route, traveling from Nulato to Nome. This journey required navigating blizzards, hidden crevasses, and wind chills that dropped to 85 degrees below zero.
Togo's path to heroism was unlikely. Born around 1913, he was initially considered a 'canine delinquent' due to his rowdy and difficult behavior. At six months old, Seppala even gave him away to be a pet, only for the puppy to break through a glass window and run miles back to the kennel. This intense devotion eventually led him to the lead spot on Seppala's team, where he won the All Alaska Sweepstakes three years in a row from 1915 to 1917.
Despite his immense endurance and intelligence, Togo's role was largely overshadowed by the mythologized stories of Balto in the aftermath of the mission. While Balto's statue stands in New York, Togo's legacy remains a vital chapter in the history of the Alaskan frontier and the survival of the Nome community.
