The final performance of Bill Paxton was a gritty, short-lived television crime drama
In short: Fifteen years after the 2001 film, the Training Day television series arrived on CBS in 2017. Starring Bill Paxton as a morally ambiguous detective and Justin Cornwell as his rookie partner, the show explored the LAPD Special Investigation Section before its sudden cancellation following the lead actor's untimely death.
Developed by Antoine Fuqua and Jerry Bruckheimer, the Training Day series was designed as a direct follow-up to the original 2001 film. The narrative centers on Officer Kyle Craig, played by Justin Cornwell, who is tasked by Deputy Chief Joy Lockhart to go undercover. His mission is to monitor the activities of Detective Frank Roarke, a veteran maverick portrayed by Bill Paxton. Roarke operates within the LAPD's Special Investigation Section, a unit tasked with pursuing the most dangerous criminals, often utilizing methods that exist in a legal gray area.
The production process saw several shifts, with Danny Cannon eventually directing the pilot instead of Fuqua. The cast included Katrina Law as Detective Rebecca Lee, a character rescued by Roarke as a child, and Julie Benz as Holly Butler, a Hollywood madam with a romantic history with the detective. Despite the pedigree of the creative team, the series struggled to find critical favor. Upon its release, it was met with generally unfavorable reviews, holding a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 38 out of 100 on Metacritic, with critics noting it failed to distinguish itself from standard police procedurals.
The series faced a tragic conclusion when lead actor Bill Paxton died on February 25, 2017, at age 61, following complications from heart surgery. Although all 13 commissioned episodes had been filmed by December 2016, the show's future was effectively sealed by the loss of its star. CBS announced on May 17, 2017, that it would not order further episodes. The series remains a notable footnote in television history, serving as one of the final projects for Paxton, who channeled a veteran intensity reminiscent of the original film's iconic characters.
