From rugby league backrower to UFC's lightweight contender
In short: Before stepping into the Octagon, Tom Nolan was a tearaway backrower for the Toowoomba Clydesdales. After deciding to abandon rugby for mixed martial arts at age 15, the Australian athlete transformed his defensive wrestling and jujutsu training into a professional career that has seen him climb the UFC rankings.
Born in Toowoomba, Queensland, on 8 March 2000, Tom Nolan's journey to professional mixed martial arts began with a pivot from rugby league. After playing for the Toowoomba Clydesdales, Nolan sought to improve his defensive capabilities by training in wrestling and jujutsu. By age 15, he had completed three MMA fights and decided to focus entirely on the sport rather than rugby. His brother, Luke, was also his employer at a local plumbing business. He was originally trained by Zac Talbot and Elijah Kennedy at the Integrated Martial Arts Gym.
Nolan's amateur career was marked by an eight-win, one-loss record, including two championships in the XFC Australia promotion. He turned professional on 12 December 2020, defeating Sam Flint by unanimous decision. His path to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was secured on 8 August 2023, when he won a first-round knockout against Bogdan Grad on Dana White's Contender Series, earning him a UFC contract. Following his victory over Sam Flint, he faced Trevor Sinclair at Eternal MMA 63. He secured that win through a unanimous decision.
Since joining the UFC, Nolan has experienced both setbacks and significant milestones. After a first-round TKO loss in his debut against Nikolas Motta on 13 January 2024, he secured several victories, including a first-round technical knockout against Victor Martinez on 18 May 2024. His performance against Charlie Campbell, where he won via a first-round rear-naked choke, earned him his first Performance of the Night award. As of 3 August 2026, Nolan is ranked #11 in the Meta UFC lightweight rankings. He later achieved a unanimous decision victory against Alex Reyes at UFC 305. His subsequent win over Viacheslav Borshchev also came via unanimous decision.
