How Australian fighter Quillan Salkilld rapidly ascended the ranks of the Ultimate Fighting Championship
In short: Born in Pinjarra and raised in Broome, Quillan Salkilld transitioned from Australian rules football to mixed martial arts in 2018. After dominating the regional circuit, he secured a UFC contract in 2024. Since his debut, he has achieved a rapid string of victories and multiple performance awards in the lightweight division.
Quillan Zane Salkilld, born on 28 December 1999, began his combat sports journey with an amateur record of 8–3. His professional path accelerated after he captured the Eternal MMA Lightweight Championship on 10 June 2023, finishing Blake Donnelly in just 41 seconds. This regional success served as a springboard, leading him to Dana White's Contender Series 70 on 3 September 2024, where a unanimous decision victory earned him a coveted UFC contract.
Salkilld's impact on the UFC was immediate. During his debut at UFC 312 on 8 February 2025, he secured the second-fastest knockout victory by a debuting lightweight, finishing Anshul Jubli in 19 seconds. This performance set the tone for a prolific 2025 and 2026, during which he accumulated five Performance of the Night awards. His victories have included high-profile finishes against opponents such as Nasrat Haqparast, Jamie Mullarkey, and Beneil Dariush.
By 8 August 2026, Salkilld reached a significant milestone by headlining his first UFC main event at UFC Fight Night 284. He defeated former KSW champion Mateusz Gamrot via a first-round rear naked choke. As of 10 August 2026, these consistent wins have placed him at #6 in the Meta UFC lightweight rankings. His rapid rise has been marked by accolades, including the 2025 Fan's Choice Debut of the Year and the 2025 UFC Knockout of the Year for his finish of Haqparast.
The technical diversity of his wins—ranging from knockouts to submissions—has established Salkilld as a versatile threat in the lightweight division. While his early career involved a loss, his professional trajectory has been defined by high-impact finishes and a rapid accumulation of awards, cementing his status as a breakthrough athlete in the sport.
