From the boxing ring to the classroom: the unlikely career of Tony Danza
In short: Before he became a household name on television, Tony Danza was a professional middleweight boxer with a knack for first-round knockouts. His transition from the ring to Hollywood stardom is only half the story; he later traded the spotlight for a 10th-grade English classroom in Philadelphia.
Born Anthony Salvatore Iadanza in 1951, Danza grew up in Brooklyn before attending the University of Dubuque on a wrestling scholarship. His entry into professional boxing began almost by accident when friends signed him up for the New York City Golden Gloves tournament in 1975. He proved surprisingly effective, winning his first six bouts by knockout in the opening round. Between 1976 and 1979, he maintained a professional record of eight wins and three losses, all eight of his victories coming via knockout.
Danza's pivot to acting occurred after a producer spotted him at a boxing gym. This led to his breakout role as Tony Banta on the sitcom Taxi, followed by his long-running turn as Tony Micelli on Who's the Boss?. Throughout his career, Danza has demonstrated a restless versatility, moving from television sitcoms to Broadway stages, including a critically acclaimed performance in the 1999 revival of The Iceman Cometh and a stint as Max Bialystock in The Producers. He even released an album as a 1950s-style crooner in 2002.
His career took another unexpected turn during the 2009–2010 school year when he stepped into a high school classroom. Filmed for a reality series, Danza taught 10th-grade English at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. He later chronicled this experience in a 2012 book, reflecting on the challenges of his time as a rookie educator. Beyond the screen and stage, Danza has explored diverse ventures, from co-authoring a cookbook with his son to managing a historic cheese shop in Manhattan and founding an organization to support young artists.
