From UFC icon to Misfits champion: The unconventional career of Tony Ferguson
In short: Tony Ferguson, once a dominant force in the UFC, transformed from a decorated collegiate wrestler into a professional fighter known for his relentless style. After a historic run and a challenging final chapter in the octagon, he reinvented himself in the boxing ring, capturing a championship title in a new promotion.
Born in 1984, Anthony Armand Ferguson Padilla emerged from a background in high school football and wrestling to become a standout collegiate athlete. His transition to mixed martial arts began serendipitously while working as a bartender in California, where a patron noticed his cauliflower ear and introduced him to the sport. Ferguson quickly climbed the ranks, eventually winning season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2011, which launched his long-standing tenure with the UFC.
Ferguson’s UFC career was defined by both high-level success and persistent misfortune. He secured the Interim UFC Lightweight Championship in 2017 but famously never held an undisputed belt, despite being widely considered one of the sport's greatest fighters. His path was frequently disrupted by injuries and cancelled bouts, most notably his repeatedly scheduled, yet never realized, matchup against Khabib Nurmagomedov. By the end of his UFC run in 2024, Ferguson had endured eight consecutive defeats, setting a new mark for the most successive losses in the organization's history.
Following his departure from the UFC in early 2025, Ferguson pivoted to professional boxing under the Global Fight League and Misfits Boxing banners. His adaptability allowed him to secure the MFB middleweight championship by defeating Salt Papi in August 2025. He further solidified his standing in this new discipline by winning the vacant MFB middleweight title against Warren Spencer in December 2025. This late-career shift highlights his enduring competitiveness, moving from the grueling ground-control battles of the octagon to the striking-focused world of professional boxing.
