In short: When a flat tire forces a family to stay at the Sleep Well motel, the toys left in the car discover something far more sinister than a horror movie. What begins as a missing Mr. Potato Head spirals into a high-stakes investigation of a theft ring.

Released on ABC on October 16, 2013, Toy Story of Terror! is a Halloween television special that expands the Toy Story universe following the events of Toy Story 3. Written and directed by Angus MacLane, the story follows Bonnie and her mother during a road trip to visit Bonnie's grandmother. While the humans are incapacitated by sleep, the toys—including Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie—embark on a mission to find the missing Mr. Potato Head.

The narrative shifts from a simple search to a mystery involving a large-scale conspiracy. The toys discover that the motel manager, Ron, uses a trained iguana named Mr. Jones to steal unattended items and toys from guests. These stolen goods are then sold through online auctions. During the chaos, Jessie encounters Combat Carl, an action figure separated from his original owner, Billy, who encourages her to face her fears to rescue her friends.

The special was originally conceived as a seven-minute short for the Toy Story Toons series, but it evolved into a half-hour production featuring a score by Michael Giacchino. Critics have largely praised the special; Rotten Tomatoes shows a 94% positive rating from 17 reviews, and Metacritic notes a weighted average of 80 out of 100. While some critics noted the heavy reliance on established franchise themes, others, like the New York Times, described the work as 'charming.'

The resolution brings the theft ring to an end when Mr. Potato Head's hand reveals the stolen toys to Bonnie and her mother, leading to the threat of police intervention. The special eventually moved to Disney+ in October 2020, cementing its place in the annual Halloween television tradition.
