From Cal player to head coach: The winding career of Tosh Lupoi
In short: Tosh Lupoi has navigated a complex path through college and professional football, marked by elite recruiting prowess, high-profile controversies, and championship success. After a long journey across multiple programs, including a stint at Alabama, Lupoi has returned to his alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley, as head coach.
Born in 1981, Tosh Lupoi began his football career as a defensive lineman at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2000 to 2005. His transition into coaching began under Jeff Tedford, who provided his first professional opportunity. Lupoi quickly established himself as a formidable recruiter, earning National Recruiter of the Year honors from Rivals.com in 2010. However, his early career was also marked by controversy; he was suspended in 2010 for instructing a player to feign an injury during a game against Oregon.
Lupoi's career trajectory shifted significantly when he moved to the University of Washington in 2012. His departure from Cal was contentious, as several high-profile recruits, including Shaq Thompson, followed him to the Huskies. During this period, he was also linked to public scrutiny regarding team expenses. Following his time at Washington, Lupoi joined the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2014. Under his guidance as a defensive coordinator, the team achieved significant success, winning national titles in 2015 and 2017 while consistently ranking among the nation's best in defensive metrics.
Following his tenure at Alabama, Lupoi spent several years in the NFL, holding positions with the Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He returned to the college ranks in 2022 as the defensive coordinator for the Oregon Ducks. His tenure at Oregon concluded after the 2025 season, during which the team reached the College Football Playoff. On December 4, 2025, Lupoi was appointed the 35th head coach of the California Golden Bears, effectively ending a 14-season absence from his alma mater. His move was facilitated by a waived $2 million buyout, supported by Oregon head coach Dan Lanning.
