In short: In 1997, Tracy McGrady entered the NBA as a relatively unknown ninth overall pick. Yet, through sheer offensive brilliance and a series of high-stakes trades, he rose to become one of the greatest shooting guards in basketball history, eventually earning a place in the Hall of Fame.

McGrady's ascent began with a meteoric rise through the amateur ranks. After a dominant high school career at Auburndale and Mount Zion Christian Academy, he gained national prominence at the Adidas ABCD Camp. His performance there was so impactful that he transitioned from an unranked prospect to the top player in the country, a feat marked by a signature windmill dunk.

His professional journey was defined by periods of immense individual dominance and significant team transitions. After an early, difficult stint with the Toronto Raptors alongside his cousin Vince Carter, McGrady signed a $92.8 million contract with the Orlando Magic in 2000. It was in Orlando that he truly emerged as a superstar, winning the 2001 Most Improved Player award and securing back-to-back scoring titles in 2003 and 2004. During this era, he achieved legendary feats, such as scoring 62 points in a single game.

However, his career was also a saga of physical resilience. Following a 2004 trade to the Houston Rockets to pair with Yao Ming, McGrady faced a series of debilitating injuries. Back spasms, shoulder issues, and knee surgeries, including a microfracture procedure in 2009, eventually hampered his explosiveness. Despite these setbacks, he remained a formidable force, even finding success in the Chinese Basketball Association before retiring in 2013. His legacy is cemented by his 2017 induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
