The draft that cemented a dynasty and redefined the 'Green Room'
In short: In 1997, the NBA lottery didn't just crown a new franchise player; it signaled a shift in how the league curated its stars. From high school phenoms to international pioneers, this draft served as a laboratory for the modern era of professional basketball.
The 1997 NBA Draft was defined by the arrival of Tim Duncan. Despite the Boston Celtics holding the best odds at 36 percent due to their poor record, it was the San Antonio Spurs who secured the top pick after losing David Robinson and Sean Elliott to early-season injuries. Duncan became the cornerstone of a franchise, eventually leading the Spurs to five championships and earning three Finals MVP awards over a 19-year career in San Antonio.
Beyond the first pick, the draft showcased a diversifying pipeline of talent. It marked a significant moment for high school entries—the third consecutive year they were permitted—and saw Tracy McGrady enter as a phenom from Mount Zion Christian Academy. The draft also highlighted the growing international and minor-league landscape, featuring Slovenian player Marko Milič and marking the first time a player entered via an American minor league that wasn't the CBA or EBA.
The event was also a milestone for the 'Green Room' experience. By 1997, this became the twentieth draft to utilize the staging area where top prospects wait with families before being called by Commissioner David Stern. The NBA’s team presidents and general managers voted on the invite list, selecting only the top 15 prospects. This year was noted for its high accuracy in selection, missing only Danny Fortson at the tenth spot.
The draft's structure was also unique due to procedural quirks. Because the Vancouver Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors were expansion teams, they were barred from the first overall pick despite their lottery probabilities. Additionally, the Washington Wizards forfeited their 17th pick to sign Juwan Howard, resulting in a draft with only 28 first-round selections out of 57 total picks.
