In short: Originally produced in Japan as Transformers: Car Robots, this 2000 series underwent a significant transformation for its American release. While the Japanese version maintained continuity with previous iterations, the localized Robots in Disguise functioned as a standalone reboot, introducing new character names and a self-contained narrative for Western viewers.

The series, produced by Nihon Ad Systems and Studio Gallop with support from Dongwoo Animation, first aired in Japan in 2000. When it arrived on the American Fox Kids programming block on September 8, 2001, it brought a fresh start to the franchise. This localization was distinct from its source material, not only in its narrative independence but also in its presentation, including differences in the three clip shows featured in both versions.

The plot centers on the Autobots' efforts to prevent the Predacons from draining Earth's energy. The conflict escalates when the Predacon leader, Megatron, captures Dr. Kenneth Onishi, forcing the Autobots to form an alliance with the doctor's son, Koji Onishi. The stakes rise further when both factions discover a crashed Cybertronian spaceship containing six protoforms. Megatron seizes these, reprogramming them into the villainous Decepticons, while his sub-commander, Sky-Byte, works to prove his loyalty by hunting for O-Parts.

The narrative reaches a climax with the discovery of Fortress Maximus, a massive Transformer concealed on Earth. As the factions compete for its power, Dr. Onishi escapes and aids the Autobots in their search for the Orb of Sigma. Megatron evolves into Galvatron using the Orb's power, but the Autobots secure the power key, Cerebros. In the final confrontation, the Autobot leader Optimus Prime and his bitter brother, Ultra Magnus, merge into Omega Prime to defeat Galvatron. While most of the villains are returned to Cybertron for justice, Sky-Byte manages to evade capture, disappearing into the oceans of Earth.
