How a mining accident on Cybertron sparked the legendary war between Optimus and Megatron
In short: Before they were iconic leaders, Optimus Prime and Megatron were simply Orion Pax and D-16, two lowly miners working the depths of Cybertron. Their transformation from brothers-in-arms to bitter enemies is the emotional heart of Transformers One, a visually striking animated prequel that reimagines the origins of a global franchise.
Released in 2024 and directed by Josh Cooley, Transformers One moves away from the live-action spectacle of previous films to explore the early days of Cybertron. The narrative centers on Orion Pax and D-16, who discover that their leader, Sentinel Prime, is a fraud who betrayed the original Primes to secure his own power. By uncovering the truth about the planet's hierarchy and the theft of the transformation cogs, the duo finds themselves on opposing sides of a moral divide. While Orion seeks to restore the planet's integrity, D-16 adopts the name Megatron, eventually leading the Decepticons in a declaration of war against the newly formed Autobots.
The film’s aesthetic draws heavily from Generation 1 designs and Art Deco architecture, aiming for a grand, epic scale that feels crafted by human hands. Industrial Light & Magic provided the animation, focusing on making the robotic characters more emotive and human-like to carry the story without the presence of human actors. This shift in medium was praised by critics, with many noting that animation allows for a more sophisticated and dramatically satisfying exploration of the franchise's lore than previous live-action installments.
Despite positive critical reception—holding an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the film underperformed at the box office, grossing $129 million worldwide against a production budget estimated between $75 million and $147 million. While the opening weekend was disappointing, the film received high marks from audiences, with many citing the voice performances of Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry as standouts. By focusing on the tragedy of a fractured friendship rather than just explosive action, the film attempts to revitalize the brand for both longtime fans and newcomers.
