How a late-blooming athlete became a heavyweight force in the Ultimate Fighting Championship
In short: Travis Browne did not start martial arts until age 26, yet he rapidly ascended to the UFC heavyweight division. Known as Hapa, a Hawaiian term for mixed blood, his career was marked by explosive knockouts, controversial officiating, and a high-profile life that eventually drew him away from professional competition.
Born in 1982, Travis Browne initially focused on basketball, playing at the high school and collegiate levels before discovering Brazilian jiu-jitsu in his late twenties. His transition to mixed martial arts was remarkably swift; he turned professional in 2009 and quickly built an undefeated 9–0 record in smaller organizations. By March 2010, he had signed with the UFC, where he immediately made an impact with a first-round TKO victory in his debut.
Browne’s UFC tenure was defined by a volatile mix of spectacular success and significant controversy. He earned four Knockout of the Night bonuses and was recognized for his 2013 comeback victory against Alistair Overeem. However, his fights were frequently marred by disputes. His 2013 win over Gabriel Gonzaga involved illegal 12–6 elbows, and his 2016 victory over Matt Mitrione was criticized for repeated eye pokes. Despite these moments, he remained a prominent figure, tying for the fourth-most post-fight bonuses in UFC heavyweight history with seven awards.
The latter half of his career saw a decline in performance, culminating in a string of losses that led UFC president Dana White to suggest retirement after a 2017 submission defeat to Alexey Oleynik. Beyond the cage, Browne’s personal life drew intense scrutiny, including a 2015 domestic violence investigation that ultimately found inconclusive evidence. He later married former Women's Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, with whom he has two daughters. His final public act of note occurred in 2019, when he helped subdue a fan who attacked wrestler Bret Hart during a WWE Hall of Fame ceremony.
