In short: Trey Hendrickson was once a mid-round draft prospect fighting for a backup role. Today, he stands as one of the most feared defensive forces in the NFL. His journey from Florida Atlantic University to record-breaking seasons with the Bengals and a massive contract with the Ravens reveals a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Born in 1994, Trey Hendrickson began his professional career after being selected 103rd overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 2017 NFL draft. Initially fighting for a roster spot against veterans like Darryl Tapp and Alex Okafor, Hendrickson spent his early years as a rotational player. His breakout began to take shape during the 2020 season, where he recorded 13.5 sacks, signaling his emergence as a premier pass-rusher capable of dominating elite quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

Upon joining the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021, Hendrickson transformed into a franchise cornerstone. He shattered the team's single-season sack record in his first year with 14 sacks, a feat he would repeatedly surpass. By the 2024 season, he led the entire NFL with 17.5 sacks, earning first-team All-Pro honors. His ability to consistently disrupt offenses—highlighted by a four-sack performance against the Las Vegas Raiders—solidified his reputation as a game-changing defensive end.

Despite his on-field success, Hendrickson's tenure in Cincinnati was marked by complex contract negotiations. Following a hold-in during the 2025 training camp over concerns regarding guaranteed money, he eventually agreed to a salary restructure before suffering a season-ending hip injury. In March 2026, he transitioned to the Baltimore Ravens, signing a four-year, $112 million contract. This move marked the latest chapter for a player who, despite being projected as a mid-round pick, has consistently defied expectations through his relentless pressure on the quarterback.

Beyond the statistics, Hendrickson’s career is defined by his resilience and technical growth. Whether battling through injuries or navigating the business side of professional football, he has maintained a high level of performance that earned him multiple Pro Bowl selections. His path from a criminal justice major at Florida Atlantic to a centerpiece of the Ravens' defense underscores the volatile yet rewarding nature of professional football careers.
