Trey McBride is rewriting the record books for NFL tight ends
In short: From a multi-sport high school standout in Colorado to the highest-paid tight end in NFL history, Trey McBride has rapidly evolved into one of the league's most prolific offensive weapons. His journey includes historic collegiate dominance and a record-breaking professional career that continues to reshape expectations for his position.
Born in 1999, Trey McBride emerged from Fort Morgan, Colorado, as a versatile athlete who excelled in baseball, basketball, and football. His collegiate career at Colorado State University was marked by historic consistency. By the end of his 2021 senior season, he had become the first unanimous All-American in the school's history and the recipient of the prestigious John Mackey Award. He left Colorado State holding the program's career records for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end, cementing his status as a premier prospect.
Selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2022 NFL draft, McBride quickly transitioned to the professional level. His impact became undeniable by his second season, when he became the first Cardinals tight end to record a 100-yard game since 1989. His trajectory accelerated further in 2024 and 2025, as he set new benchmarks for the position, including becoming the first tight end to record consecutive seasons with 100 catches and surpassing Travis Kelce for the most consecutive games with at least five receptions.
Beyond his on-field achievements, McBride holds a unique place in professional sports history as the first NFL player with same-sex parents. His professional ascent culminated in April 2025, when he signed a four-year, $76 million contract extension, briefly making him the highest-paid tight end in league history. While his records continue to be challenged, his performance—characterized by high-volume receiving and consistent production—has established him as a central figure in the modern evolution of the tight end position.
McBride's career is defined by his ability to adapt and perform under pressure. Whether overcoming a concussion in 2024 or navigating the complexities of the NFL's evolving offensive schemes, he has consistently demonstrated the durability and skill required to lead his team. His record-setting 2025 season, which included 126 catches and 11 touchdowns, underscores his role as a foundational piece for the Arizona Cardinals' offense for years to come.
