In short: Often dismissed as a mere extension of Ankara, Turkish Cypriots are asserting their own political agency. Recent elections revealed a community demanding dignity and inclusion, challenging the international perception of their statelet as a puppet. This is a story of a people striving to be heard in a complex geopolitical landscape.

The international community frequently views the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a puppet state, a perception reinforced by academic and media discourse. However, this narrative often ignores the repeated instances of Turkish Cypriot resistance against external interference. From supporting UN reunification plans in the early 2000s to staging mass protests against Turkish government impositions in 2011, the population has consistently demonstrated a desire for autonomy.

The 2020 election of Tufan Erhürman serves as a recent example of this agency. Garnering 63 percent of the vote, Erhürman ran on a platform of inclusion and dignity, explicitly rejecting the hardline policies of his predecessor, Ersin Tatar. His campaign engaged a diverse electorate, including young people and the descendants of settlers, to redefine what it means to be a Turkish Cypriot. This victory was a clear message to Ankara that the community intends to decide its own future.

Despite these democratic expressions, Turkish Cypriots face what scholars call epistemic erasure. International institutions often frame the conflict in ways that exclude Turkish Cypriot experiences. For instance, the European Parliament’s decision to erect a monument to Greek Cypriot victims of 1974 has been criticized for ignoring Turkish Cypriot victims and complicating the historical record established by the UN’s Committee on Missing Persons. For Turkish Cypriots, the struggle is not just political, but a battle to have their reality recognized by a world that prefers a simpler, one-sided narrative.
