From Funkasaurus to Fox News: The Unlikely Career Arc of Wrestler Tyrus
In short: George Murdoch, known as Tyrus, transitioned from a WWE funk-dancing character to a prominent cable news personality. His journey spans professional wrestling championships, a bestselling memoir, and a controversial tenure at Fox News, illustrating a rare crossover between the squared circle and the high-stakes world of political commentary.
Born in 1973, George Murdoch navigated a challenging childhood, including time in foster care, before pursuing college football at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. His athletic trajectory shifted after a ruptured appendix surgery left him with a permanent limp, eventually leading him toward professional wrestling. Under the WWE banner, he initially worked as a bodyguard for Alberto Del Rio before adopting the flamboyant 'Funkasaurus' persona in 2012. This character, complete with backup dancers, became a signature, though he later transitioned into more aggressive roles before his 2014 release.
Following his WWE tenure, Murdoch reinvented himself as Tyrus in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). His time there was marked by shifting alliances, including a stint as a 'fixer' for hire, and eventual departures driven by creative disagreements. In 2021, he joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), where he achieved his first world championship, the NWA World's Heavyweight Championship, in 2022. His wrestling career concluded in August 2023, when he retired following a bullrope match loss to Ethan Carter III at NWA 75.
Parallel to his wrestling career, Murdoch cultivated a presence on Fox News. Starting as a guest commentator on The Greg Gutfeld Show in 2016, he became a regular panelist on Gutfeld! and hosted programs on Fox Nation and OutKick. His media career has not been without controversy; in 2019, co-host Britt McHenry filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Murdoch and Fox News. The case was voluntarily dismissed in 2021 following a legal settlement. Beyond television, Murdoch has authored several books, including his 2022 New York Times bestseller, Just Tyrus: A Memoir.
