How a Hong Kong television network became a global cultural powerhouse for Chinese-speaking audiences.
In short: Launched in 1967 as a wireless alternative to subscription cable, TVB evolved from a local broadcaster into a dominant force in Chinese-language entertainment. Through iconic dramas and massive variety shows, it shaped the cultural landscape of the region, eventually building the largest television production studio in all of Asia.
Television Broadcasts Limited, widely known as TVB, began its journey on 19 November 1967. Founded by Sir Run Run Shaw, Sir Douglas Clague, and Harold Lee Hsiao-wo, the station was created to provide a free-to-air alternative to the existing subscription-based Rediffusion Television. Its launch was a logistical feat, requiring a network of transmitters atop mountains to overcome Hong Kong's challenging topography and reach the territory's population centers.
The network quickly became a cultural institution, producing legendary dramas like The Bund and The Legend of the Condor Heroes, which resonated across the Greater China region. Its influence extended beyond fiction; the variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight became a staple of local life, while the network's music awards and singing competitions defined the Cantopop industry. By 2003, TVB consolidated its operations into a massive, 110,000-square-metre facility in the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, featuring a production studio capable of seating over six hundred people.
Despite its success, TVB has navigated significant controversy and change. The network has faced scrutiny over its exclusive artist contracts and the integrity of its music awards, leading to investigations by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. In recent years, the company has undergone corporate restructuring, rebranding subsidiaries like 77 Atelier and the TVB Music Group to adapt to modern production models and partnerships with mainland Chinese streaming platforms like Youku and Tencent, ensuring its continued relevance in a shifting media landscape.
