How a tragic accident reshaped the landscape of UAAP Season 89
In short: The 89th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines was set to be a standard display of collegiate talent. However, a sudden tragedy involving Ateneo de Manila University players during a team building activity in Aurora fundamentally altered the tournament's administration and sparked intense scrutiny of student-athlete safety.
The season, hosted by Far Eastern University, was marked by a profound tragedy on June 8, 2026. Ateneo de Manila University confirmed that Divine Adili, a UAAP athlete, and new recruit Rene Baterbonia drowned while participating in a team building event near Dipaculao, Aurora. This event prompted a swift response from the UAAP, which stated it would "will go where the evidence leads."
The fallout from the incident led to significant disciplinary actions. While the UAAP allowed Ateneo's teams to continue participating, it issued a perpetual ban on head coach Tab Baldwin and certain members of the Ateneo men's basketball coaching staff present in Aurora. This decision followed Baldwin's earlier resignation as head coach. The incident also drew comparisons to previous UAAP scandals involving UST, La Salle, and Adamson.
Beyond the tragedy, the tournament's structure saw technical adjustments. The schedule was cut from eight to five game days between September 13 and September 30, 2026, to allow for players in the 2026 Asian Games and 2026 FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup. Additionally, a new roster rule was introduced to provide teams with "roster security," allowing up to two imports in the pool, though only one is permitted on the active roster of 16 players.
The competitive format for Season 89 remains diverse. Men's basketball is mandatory for all eight universities. The collegiate division and the under-16 boys' high school tournament are held in the first semester, while the under-19 boys' and girls' tournaments occur in the second semester. The under-19 girls' tournament, consisting of only four teams, is classified as a demonstration sport and is not mandatory.
