From turntables to country charts: the musical evolution of Matthew Shafer
In short: Before he was Uncle Kracker, Matthew Shafer was a novice DJ learning on the fly for Kid Rock. He eventually pivoted from hip-hop to a pure country sound, securing chart-topping hits and enduring collaborations. His career trajectory reveals a rare ability to navigate shifting genres across three decades of music.
Born in Mount Clemens, Michigan, in 1974, Matthew Shafer initially entered the music scene as a performer in Kid Rock's backing ensemble, Twisted Brown Trucker. Despite having no formal experience with turntables, he joined the group in 1994 after his brother, an experienced DJ, introduced him to the craft. Shafer spent years as a featured vocalist and DJ before launching his solo career with the 2000 album Double Wide, which achieved multi-platinum status and featured the hit single Follow Me.
Shafer’s sound underwent a significant transformation over the following years. While his early work was rooted in hip-hop, his 2005 album Seventy Two and Sunny marked a departure, featuring no rap elements and embracing a country aesthetic. This shift was bolstered by his partnership with country star Kenny Chesney, particularly on the successful track When the Sun Goes Down. His later work, including the 2012 album Midnight Special, solidified this transition, marking his first project without any involvement from Kid Rock.
Beyond his studio albums, Shafer has maintained a consistent presence through touring and frequent single releases. His career has seen notable peaks, such as his cover of Drift Away, which set a record for the most weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart. Despite legal challenges in 2007, where he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge following a groping allegation, he continued to produce music, culminating in his 2024 album Coffee & Beer. His longevity is defined by his adaptability, moving from the turntables of the 1990s to the country-infused soundscapes of his recent work.
