In short: Released in 2010, this high-octane title from PlatinumGames transformed the cover-based shooter genre. By introducing a unique sliding-boost mechanic and an Augmented Reaction suit that slows time, it forced players to abandon static cover in favor of constant, high-speed movement, creating a distinctively aggressive and fast-paced combat experience.

Developed under the direction of Shinji Mikami, Vanquish was designed to capture the feeling of speed found in the 1970s anime series Casshern. To achieve this, the team implemented a sliding-boost mechanic that allows the protagonist, DARPA agent Sam Gideon, to navigate the battlefield at extreme velocities. This system functions as both a defensive escape and an offensive setup, fundamentally altering how players interact with cover. Unlike traditional shooters, Vanquish penalizes players for lingering behind barriers, forcing them to remain mobile while facing projectiles arriving from every direction.

The core of the gameplay revolves around the Augmented Reaction (AR) suit. When the player sustains heavy damage, the suit automatically triggers AR mode, slowing down time and increasing Sam's reflexes tenfold. Players can also activate this state manually to target enemy weak points with precision. However, these abilities are balanced by a strict heat management system; excessive use of boosters or AR mode causes the suit to overheat, leaving Sam vulnerable. This risk-reward loop is further complicated by the BLADE weapon system, which can store and shapeshift between three different weapon types on the fly.

While critics praised the game's visual style, boss battles, and innovative mechanics, the title faced criticism for its short campaign length, which some reviewers noted could be completed in four hours or less. Despite this, the game earned significant acclaim, including the 'Best Game No One Played' award from GameSpot. Initially debuting on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the game has since seen a Windows release in 2017 and a 10th-anniversary remaster for modern consoles. As of 2024, total sales are estimated to exceed 1.33 million units worldwide, cementing its reputation as a cult classic of the genre.
