In short: In 2007, Nintendo released a game where the protagonist's greatest threat was her own body. As Samus Aran fights to save the galaxy from a mutagenic infection, she must balance a high-powered combat mode that grants temporary invincibility but risks a permanent, irreversible transformation into a mindless beast.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption introduced a unique mechanical tension through 'Hypermode.' This feature allowed the player to harness Phazon energy for more powerful attacks and temporary invincibility. However, it functioned as a double-edged sword: the mode drained Samus's health and would end after 25 seconds or once a specific gauge was depleted. If the player failed to manage the energy or was hit by a Phazon Grenade, they entered 'Corrupt Hypermode,' leading to a non-standard game over where Samus was permanently overtaken by the infection. The development of this system was a collaborative effort between Retro Studios and Nintendo EAD. While Retro Studios initially feared that Hypermode might be too difficult to balance without sacrificing fun, Nintendo suggested it become a core mechanic to heighten tension.

The goal was to create a gameplay loop where the player felt powerful but remained constantly wary of the consequences of over-reliance on their own corruption. This mechanical risk mirrored the narrative stakes of the game. Set six months after Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, the story follows Samus as she is infected by her doppelgänger, Dark Samus. To fight back, she is equipped with a Phazon Enhancement Device (PED) by the Galactic Federation. This creates a tragic irony: she must use the very mutagen destroying her world to survive it, eventually traveling to the planet Phaaze to destroy the source of the corruption at the cost of her own physical integrity.
