How a single battle in 1277 launched a dynasty of Milanese dukes
In short: For decades, the Visconti and Della Torre families fought a brutal struggle for control of Milan. It took a decisive military victory, a series of executions, and a strategic takeover of the archbishopric to transform a noble lineage into the powerful lords of Northern Italy.
The Visconti rise to power was not a gradual ascent but a violent seizure of authority. While the family had been present in Milan since at least 1075, their era of dominance truly began in 1277. Following the Battle of Desio on 21 January 1277, the Visconti forces defeated the Della Torre army, clearing the path for Archbishop Ottone to enter Milan and establish the Visconti Lordship.
This victory followed years of intense factional warfare. The Della Torre family had gained significant influence after 1240, utilizing their control over tax collection to fund resistance against the Holy Roman Empire. The conflict was deeply personal; in 1276, the execution of Tebaldo Visconti and other leaders by beheading served as a precursor to the family's eventual triumph.
As the dynasty matured, the Visconti transitioned from lords to dukes. Under Gian Galeazzo, who married into the French royal house in 1360, the family sought to unify much of Northern and Central Italy. The family's influence was cemented through strategic matrimonial alliances, connecting the Visconti to the houses of Habsburg, Wittelsbach, and even the English royalty.
The era of Visconti rule lasted until 1447, ending with the death of Filippo Maria Visconti. Their reign was characterized by both territorial expansion and internal volatility, often marked by shifting power between various branches of the family and sudden transitions of power following the deaths of key leaders like the archbishop Giovanni.
