In this Mexican animated series, a malevolent mastermind helps other villains solve heroic problems.
In short: Created by Alan Ituriel, Villainous follows the Black Hat Organization, a group dedicated to assisting evildoers with their heroic dilemmas. While their leader possesses reality-bending powers, his team of aides often produces inventions with comical flaws, turning their professional evil services into a series of chaotic and unpredictable misadventures.
The series originated from a 2012 web project created by Alan Ituriel, a veteran of the Mexican animation industry. After pitching the concept at the 2014 Pixelatl Festival's IdeaToon Summit, Ituriel secured a partnership with Cartoon Network. The show initially launched as a series of one-minute shorts on the Cartoon Network Anything app in 2016, eventually expanding into a full television and web series franchise that includes books and various tie-ins.
At the center of the narrative is Black Hat, an ancient, malevolent entity of mysterious origin who commands the Black Hat Organization. He is supported by a dysfunctional team: Dr. Flug, a brilliant but nervous scientist; Demencia, a chaotic assistant obsessed with destruction; and 5.0.5., a gentle, bear-like experiment who prefers hugging over evil deeds. Their mission is to provide advice and weaponry to other villains, though their plans frequently collapse due to the small, humorous defects in Flug's inventions.
The production history of the series is as complex as its plot. While the original shorts were entirely the work of Ituriel, the full series involved a broader team, including composer Kevin Manthei and voice actor Markiplier, who portrays 5.0.5. The series faced significant production hurdles, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. These events shifted the recording process, which initially favored English-language production but later transitioned to recording in Spanish first for the series, with English dubbing following later.
The show explores a world where heroes and villains are often morally ambiguous. Characters like Miss Heed, a famous influencer-heroine, reveal darker motivations, while others like Penumbra highlight the societal struggles of those marginalized by their own conditions. Despite long hiatuses and fan-led campaigns for new content, the franchise continues to evolve, with spin-offs like Villainous: Ties of Thieves and future season installments currently in development.
